The educational setting for my proposed curriculum is a 1st-grade classroom in a
metropolitan city in Tennessee. The school currently serves approximately 780 students from
Pre-K through 4th grade. In the educational setting, 100% of students qualify for free lunch and
85% of students are identified as English Language Learners. Literacy curriculums and
interventions take precedence in this school so the curriculum I am proposing is the UbD,
Understanding by Design, in math. This curriculum would be an extension of the current
curriculum, Illustrative Math, currently in use.
A.2. Identify a curricular goal to be achieved.
When implementing UbD in my math content alongside the current Illustrative Math
curriculum, my goal is to have my students transfer their understanding of content in more ways
than on paper, such as explaining their understanding in their own words or using their
knowledge to teach the concepts to a peer. In my classroom, 17 out of the 20 students are English
learners and 13 of those 17 are at an ‘entering’ or ‘developing’ (level 1 and 2) understanding of
the English language. For that reason, the goal of the UdB will align well with the needs of my
classroom because its design focuses on assessments that showcase student understanding using
a variety of applications and offer more opportunities for success among the varying academic
and language proficiencies within my classroom.
